According to ‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers, it would be difficult to imagine the show without Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). On GH, Maurice Benard marks 30 years of service. One was to spend two years portraying the smarmy, sleazy Damian Smith (Leigh McClosky).

Or, he could take on the part of Sonny Corinthos, a nightclub owner who was supposed to be the “bad guy,” and play that part for only six months. Evidently, Maurice decided to portray Sonny. He appears to have made the right choice. On August 13, 1993, Benard made his ‘General Hospital’ debut. Back then, soaps typically only featured good guys and bad guys. Sonny started out as a villain. Young Karen Wexler (Cari Shayne), who he exploited, became drug-dependent after he persuaded her to strip at his club.

Playing this part had a profound impact on Maurice, and his feelings began to show on screen. At the time, Maurice took a brief break from taking his medication for his bipolar disorder. Maurice returned to work because of the General Hospital’s behind-the-scenes staff’s strong support. Maurice began giving Sonny depth that presumably no other actor could have given him.

It was time for Sonny’s next love interest after Marcil left. Carly Corinthos was played by Sara Brown. Initially, it was challenging to support Sonny and Carly because of how disruptive Carly was.

Second Carly was Tamara Braun. This Carly was more endearing and complex. The fame of Sonny and Carly was beginning to grow. Together, they made a great team. Fans became very invested in Sonny and Carly once Laura Wright took over the role of Carly. They were the next big super couple, and Sonny, Carly, and Jason Morgan’s (Steve Burton) soap opera writing became legendary.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Nixon Falls Changed Sonny

Cynthia Watros, who portrays Nina Reeves, is currently Maurice’s co-star on television. Fans of General Hospital find it to be a contentious pairing. Many fans are eager for it to end because they don’t like it. The fact that Sonny has “softerened” has some fans feeling relieved. Sonny’s family was unaware that he was alive thanks to Nina. They all believed he had passed away, but he was still in Nixon Falls and suffering from amnesia. Unaware of who he was, Sonny fell in love with Nina. Fans of General Hospital do not take the matter lightly. Maurice decided to talk to his fans about his bipolar disorder. Sonny’s bipolar disorder was specified in the script so that Maurice could be genuine and honest with himself.
