In Monday’s episode of Emmerdale (August 7), Chris Bisson’s Jai Sharma needed your sympathy. Jai had recently learned that Rishi (Bhasker Patel) wasn’t his biological father, a revelation that caused a split between him and Rishi that hadn’t been repaired when Rishi passed away, which had greatly worsened his grief over the passing of his dad.

Jai hugged his father’s body as he realised that Rishi had been the greatest, most devoted father he could have had and that, in the end, biology hadn’t mattered when he found his father dead at the bottom of the stairs at Holdgate.

Along with managing his own sadness, he had to coordinate flying Rishi’s remains to India for cremation. He also had to manage the grief of his siblings Priya (Fiona Wade) and Nikhil (Rik Makarem), all while keeping the fact that Rishi was not his actual father a secret.

In the episode, he was anxious about the preparations, on the phone with a distressed Nikhil, and worried about his ill son Archie (Kai Assi).

Additionally, Jai had snapped at his cousin Suni (Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana), who is actually his brother, the last time they had interacted. Before leaving for India, he made the decision to visit Holdgate to see how things were doing and to apologies to Suni.

When Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) and he arrived, they were unprepared for what they saw: a house full of people watching kids’ TV while wearing pink boas and glitter face paint, Suni wandering downstairs while partially clothed, Tom (James Chase) and Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) looking a little sheepish.

Suni clarified that there was no party; rather, they merely wanted to continue the good times they had at Pride by inviting a few people back for some food and beverages.

Laurel corrected him, saying, “That’s a party.”

Jai was understandably incensed by Suni’s disrespect for Rishi’s home, especially after he refused to apologise and insisted that he had every right to let loose before “going back to the Jewel in the Crown for two weeks of mourning.”

Jai yelled at Suni, Tom, and Belle to leave the house while he was furious. He admonished them, saying, “If you can’t show a modicum of respect for my deceased father, you damn well can find yourself somewhere else to live.” “Stuff your bags and leave.”

Suni broke the shocking news that he wasn’t travelling to India when he chose to chat to him after he had cooled down a little. He claimed that while Suni wants to be a chef, his father Amit, who is also the father of Jai, wants him to work in the family textile business. He explained, “I go to India, and I don’t come back.”

Jai will now have to make the difficult journey alone after Laurel and he decided that she should stay at home to take care of Archie.
