GENERAL HOSPITAL Production Designer Charles “Chip” Dox Dead at 80

For the cast and crew of GENERAL HOSPITAL, sad news. Emmy-winning production designer and art director Charles “Chip” Dox passed away on August 15 at the age of 80. Obrecht) wrote on X, “Another talented member of the GH family has passed.” Sincere condolences to his family, friends, coworkers, and all of the General Hospital viewers and fans who had the good fortune to witness his exquisite set and production design work.

In 1980, Dox started his career working as an art director for NBC’s DAYS OF OUR LIVES before transitioning to production designer. In 1997, he received his first Daytime Emmy Award. Later, in 1998, he took a position as Art Director on Tracy Ullman’s HBO series TRACY TAKES ON, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. On shows like the Lifetime comedy OH BABY and Telemundo’s LOS BELTRAN and VIVA VEGAS!, he continued to work as a production designer.

Dox started working as a production designer on the GH spinoff PORT CHARLES in 2003. In 2005, he transferred to GH itself to continue in that role until his retirement in 2015. Dox was nominated for seven additional Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Art Decoration/Set Decoration/Scenic Design for a Drama Series during his tenure at General Hospital, and in 2011, he won the prize twice.

According to Deadline, Dox also created the touring performances for Jackson Browne, The Beach Boys, Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Elton John. He helped redesign a pilates studio that he frequented and mentored young art directors.

His wife Jeanne, daughters Morgan Dox, Katie Segal, Hayley Dox-DaCosta, stepdaughter Megan Younger, and their families are all left to carry on without him. Donations to The World Central Kitchen may be made in his honor in lieu of flowers. During this trying time, our thoughts are with Dox’s family and friends.
