On Channel 7’s highest-rated program Home and Away, James Stewart’s character Justin and Ada Nicodemou’s character Leah ultimately tie the knot after a protracted courtship.
“They’ve been through a lot, and at times it looked like they weren’t going to get together,” Nicodemou says.
She reassures us that nothing awful will happen at this wedding, despite the fact that prior nuptials on the long-running soap opera have been rocked by calamity.
She remarks, “I’ve been assured Justin’s not going to die,” alluding to the premature deaths of her three prior marriages.
Her character has had roughly seven more relationships in between those marriages. She has also experienced trauma from the diner fire, single motherhood, miscarriages, working as a surrogate, depression, agoraphobia, and living through a bus crash and, more recently, a kidnapping.
“Leah realized she could finally get married again after their shared experience of almost dying, even though she didn’t need to prove she loved Justin.” It’s a cute storyline; although she is a control freak, she lets Justin take over everything, so she never knows what will happen.
“There are several shocks; he sings to her, and some of the characters are back, including Leah’s son VJ (Matt Little), Justin’s sister Tori (Penny McNamee), and Justin’s daughter Ava (Annabel Wolfe).
“I expressed to them my desire for Leah to have a happy ending. The best thing about Home and Away is this. Even though characters come and go, everyone who watches it can identify with something. It’s encouraging to hear that our stories are being effectively conveyed. It’s crucial to depict the uncomfortable things that we all experience in life on TV.
“Jimmy Stewart and I have been acquainted for an extended period of time.When he first appeared on the show, our characters didn’t really interact with one another. Jimmy is amazing, a really talented actor, and he brings ideas to the table. He is such an acting gift.”
Leah has always been maternal, according to Nicodemou, and her nephew Theo (Matt Evans) fills up for the absent child.
“Justin is very paternal too, they have a great bond and work really well together as parents.”
Nicodemou adds the screenplay producer performed a lot of study on psychotic episodes in response to some of the more difficult situations her character has had to face.
In an effort to do it justice, I also read a great deal. It presented me with significant challenges.”
She claims she didn’t see someone who resembled her on television when she was younger.
“So many tales that would never have been spoken in the past are told now. But you require a plenty of both shade and light. Nothing could be so weighty.
“Because Justin and Leah had endured so much, I really wanted the wedding to be a celebration. I want the audience to celebrate a really happy occasion with them.”
Nicodemou claims that, in contrast to many of her Home and Away classmates, she has never considered trying her luck in Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t want to be anyplace else; I adore my job and this nation. Being employed the entire time has been a true blessing for me. I’m a huge TV fan. After putting me to bed, my parents would let me stay up to watch Prisoner. Reading the scripts is thrilling for me, and there are so many different plot lines available.
“I adore diner days. We refer to ourselves as the diner women, and we enjoy ourselves while catching up on girlie gossip and having fun on TV. With Lynne (McGranger, who plays Irene], I’m really close. I work with some very sweet people.
She claims that she clicked with Ray Meagher (Alf Stewart) as soon as she joined the cast.
He is genuinely a wonderful man, full of grace and kindness. The cast is truly a blessing.”
Following the lovely nuptials, Nicodemou says of married life: “I’m sure there will be problems. We co-parent pretty well, and it would be interesting to have Justin’s daughter Ava back.”
“I’m extremely proud of it [the show] and I am hoping this is a TV wedding to remember.”
